Through the Lens: Photography Reimagined
Gallery500, Daytona Beach, 2018
While Director of Gallery500, Jessica curated this exhibition celebrating four talented photographers from different corners of the world. Karen Jerzyk, Matt Pearson, Greg Gawlowski, and Savannah Leigh each specialize in capturing nature and architecture, but utilize unique and innovative approaches to their craft that create captivating and unexpected images.
Karen Jerzyk photographs her models in vintage astronaut uniforms while exploring abandoned rooms and landscapes. Her carefully planned works imagine the world through the lens of a future explorer, traveling through abandoned buildings with the same curiosity and reverence that modern day archeologists exhibit toward ancient ruins of past civilizations.
Matt Pearson partners with local Australian pilots to fly over the Australian coast and capture all manner of unique and interesting places. This unusual perspective casts a new light on what might otherwise be considered familiar terrain, and forces the viewer to reconsider what constitutes a beach, coastline, or rocky outcrop.
Greg Gawlowski travels the world to capture hard to reach places such as Big Sur caverns and remote gorges in Iceland. His long exposure technique transforms turbulent waterscapes into misty and serene landscapes seemingly out of this world.
Savannah Leigh’s microphotography technique offers a close-up look at plants and animals from interesting angles that reveal the unseen and magnify the miniscule. Her works allow viewers to experience the smallest corners of the world on a large scale.
