Brilliant Hues
Gallery500, Daytona Beach, 2018
Brillian Hues features a variety of local Florida artists whose works capture the color and vibrance of Florida culture through various mediums and techniques. The pieces included in this exhibition reflect the evolving and often oppositional tapestry of subcultures that make up Florida’s evolving art landscape. The hyper-sexualized and consumer-oriented portraits by Robert Shirk coincide with Cheyenne Smith’s anti-consumer mixed media pieces celebrating individual growth and inner peace. Vicki Wilson’s large scale neon abstractions that catapult the viewer into alternate universes of color and shape are at odds with the soft pastels and organic designs of Todd and Stephanie Lynd’s ornamental wall hangings made from recycled ocean plastic. Full of contradiction and inviting comparison, Brilliant Hues doesn’t attempt to force Florida’s local art landscape into one box, but rather to celebrate the diverse and colorful range of styles present in this small corner of the United States.
